French Creek State Park is one of the largest parks in southeastern Pennsylvania, spread across parts of Berks and Chester counties. Stampede Barbecue is about 20 minutes away in Mohnton, which makes it an easy stop for lunch before a hike or dinner after a day outside.
At French Creek State Park
- Hiking: the park has miles of wooded trails, from short loops to longer routes.
- The lakes: Hopewell Lake and Scotts Run Lake are popular for fishing and paddling.
- Camping and picnics: the park has campgrounds and picnic areas.
Check the Pennsylvania DCNR website for current hours, fees and seasonal rules before you go.
Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site
Hopewell Furnace sits next to the park and preserves an early American iron making village. It is run by the National Park Service, and its hours change by season, so check before you visit.
Where to Eat After
Stampede Barbecue is at 4372 Morgantown Road in Mohnton, about 20 minutes from the park. The restaurant serves slow-smoked Texas-style brisket, ribs, pulled pork, sausage and turkey with homemade sides.
It is open Wednesday and Thursday from 11 AM to 8 PM and Friday and Saturday from 11 AM to 9 PM, and closed Sunday through Tuesday. Live folk, bluegrass and gypsy jazz shows are usually held on a Friday or Saturday evening, with no cover charge. See the events page for the schedule.
The Brewery
The restaurant is also home to Detwiler Brewing, the only wood-fired brewery in Pennsylvania. It pours cask-conditioned ales from antique hand pumps and a wild-fermented cider. Read what cask ale is before your visit.
Taking Food to the Park
Smoked meats are sold by the pound for takeout, which works well for a picnic or a campsite dinner. Pack a cooler with ice packs and see our guide to reheating BBQ leftovers for anything you take home.
