Stampede Barbecue in Mohnton, Pennsylvania, is about 3 hours from New York City by car. It is a long drive for lunch, but it fits well into a full day out of the city or a weekend in Berks and Lancaster Counties. This guide covers how to plan the trip, what to order and what else is nearby.
Getting There
The restaurant is at 4372 Morgantown Road in Mohnton, about 3 hours from Manhattan without heavy traffic. Our food truck at Ludwig’s Corner in Glenmoore is a little closer, at about 2 hours 45 minutes. Weekend traffic leaving the city can add time, so check a map app before you go.
Plan Around the Hours
The restaurant is open Wednesday and Thursday from 11 AM to 8 PM and Friday and Saturday from 11 AM to 9 PM. It is closed Sunday through Tuesday. Leaving the city in the morning puts you in Mohnton for a late lunch. Thursday is prime rib night from 4 PM to 8 PM, and most live music shows are held on a Friday or Saturday evening. See the events page for the current schedule.
What to Order
Brisket is the main draw. Order it by the pound, on a meat plate with two sides or on the Brisket Sandwich. The menu also includes pork ribs, pulled pork, sausage, turkey and homemade sides. See the full restaurant and bar menu.
Stampede is home to the only wood-fired brewery in Pennsylvania. The brewery makes cask-conditioned ales and a farmhouse cider that you can order with your meal. Learn more on our brewery page.
Pair It With Lancaster
Lancaster is about 50 minutes from the restaurant. Lancaster Central Market is one of the oldest farmers markets in the country and a common stop for visitors to the area. Check the market’s hours before you go, since it is not open every day.
Other Stops Nearby
- French Creek State Park is about 20 minutes from the restaurant, with hiking trails and two lakes.
- Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site is next to the park and preserves an early American iron making village.
- Longwood Gardens is about 45 minutes from our food truck in Glenmoore.
Make It a Weekend
Reading and Lancaster both have hotels, which makes it easy to turn the drive into an overnight trip. Staying over lets you have dinner and a beer at Stampede on a Friday or Saturday night without the long drive back the same evening.
Bring Barbecue Home
Smoked meats are sold by the pound. Bring a cooler with ice packs for the drive and refrigerate the meat when you get home. Our Heat & Eat page has reheating times for every cut.
