A Barbecue Day Trip From Philadelphia

Stampede Barbecue is about an hour and 15 minutes from Philadelphia. Here is how to plan a day trip for Texas barbecue, house-brewed beer and a few well-known stops nearby.

Smoked brisket, ribs, sausage, turkey and half chicken with pickles and sides

Stampede Barbecue is in Mohnton, in Berks County, about an hour and 15 minutes from Philadelphia by car. That makes it an easy day trip for anyone in the city or the western suburbs who wants Texas-style barbecue, house-brewed beer and a slower pace for an afternoon. This guide covers when to go, what to order and a few well-known places nearby to round out the day.

Getting There

The restaurant is at 4372 Morgantown Road in Mohnton. The drive from Center City takes about 1 hour 15 minutes without heavy traffic. From King of Prussia, plan on about 45 minutes. Drive times change with traffic, so check a map app before you leave.

When to Go

The restaurant is open Wednesday and Thursday from 11 AM to 8 PM and Friday and Saturday from 11 AM to 9 PM. It is closed Sunday through Tuesday.

  • Wednesday is wings day.
  • Thursday brings prime rib from 4 PM to 8 PM.
  • Friday and Saturday evenings are when most live music shows are held. See the events page for the current schedule.

What to Order

Brisket is the cut most people come for. You can order it by the pound, on a meat plate with two sides or on the Brisket Sandwich. Pork ribs, pulled pork, sausage and turkey are on the menu too, along with homemade sides and desserts. The full restaurant and bar menu has everything.

Stampede is also home to the only wood-fired brewery in Pennsylvania. The brewery makes cask-conditioned ales and a farmhouse cider, poured at the bar alongside the barbecue. Read more on our brewery page. If you plan to have a beer, bring a designated driver for the ride home.

Make a Day of It

Several well-known places are a short drive from the restaurant.

  • French Creek State Park is about 20 minutes away and has hiking trails and two lakes.
  • Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site sits next to the park and preserves an early American iron making village.
  • The Reading Pagoda sits on Mount Penn above the city of Reading, about 20 minutes from the restaurant.

Check each site’s hours before you go, since they change by season.

Take Some Home

Smoked meats are sold by the pound, so it is easy to bring dinner back to the city. Pack a cooler with ice packs for the drive. Our Heat & Eat page has reheating times for every cut.

If you live near Exton, Downingtown or West Chester, our food truck at Ludwig’s Corner in Glenmoore is about an hour from Philadelphia. The truck serves a smaller menu Wednesday through Saturday from 11:30 AM to 7 PM and operates seasonally. See the food truck menu for details.
